Đức Avalokiteshvara (Đức Quán Thế Âm) là một trong những vị Bồ Tát được tôn kính nhất ở Tây Tạng, Trung Quốc, Nhật bản, Hàn Quốc và Đông Nam Á là . Người Tây Tạng gọi Ngài là Chenrezig, người Trung Quốc gọi là Kuan Yin Pu Sa.
Quán Thế Âm Bồ Tát là danh hiệu của một vị Phật đáng lẽ đã chứng quả Phật, nhưng còn nguyện lẫn lộn ở cõi ta bà để cứu độ chúng sinh. Người ta cũng gọi Ngài là Quan Âm Phật, Quan Âm Như Lai, Quan Thế Âm, Quan Âm Nam Hải, Phổ Đà Phật Tổ, v.v…
Quyển kinh nói về Ngài, mà hiện nay phái Bắc Tôn (Trung Hoa, Triều Tiên, Nhật Bản, Việt Nam) còn truyền tụng là quyển “Diệu Pháp Liên Hoa Kinh Quan Thế Âm Bồ Tát Phổ Môn Phẩm”.
Theo kinh truyện để lại, Ngài phân thân giáng trần 33 kiếp, khi thì mượn xác nam nhi, khi thì làm thiếu nữ, khi thì ở vào cảnh quyền quý cao sang, khi thì vào hàng bần cùng cơ khổ, khi thì sanh làm đạo sĩ, khi thì làm tỳ khưu, v.v… Danh hiệu Quan Thế Âm, nghĩa là quan sát tiếng kêu than của chúng sanh trong thế gian để độ cho họ thoát khổ.

Đức Avalokiteshvara nhớ
lại sứ mệnh của mình là phải giải thoát tất cả chúng sinh khỏi những đau khổ
của họ. Với lòng bi mẫn vĩ đại, Ngài đăm đăm nhìn chúng sinh trong ba cõi dục
giới, sắc giới và vô sắc giới. Ngài nhận ra những ô nhiễm và đau khổ của họ.
Ngài thấy “lòng tham muốn của họ như thác nước; sân hận như một ngọn lửa hừng hực;
si mê bao phủ họ như những đám mây tối ám; kiêu mạn thì vững chắc như ngọn núi,
và sự ganh tị của họ mau lẹ như cơn gió. Giây xích bản ngã cột trói mỗi một và
toàn thể chúng sinh vào vòng sinh tử. Nỗi đau khổ mà họ phải trải nghiệm thì
như thể họ rơi vào đống lửa nóng đỏ.”

Benefits in reciting and holding the Great Compassion Mantra (Da Bei Zhou / ‘å”ß™î)
Excerpts from The Dharani Sutra

If humans and gods recite and hold the phrases of the Great Compassion Mantra, then when they approach the end of life, all the Buddhas of the ten directions will come to take them by the hand to rebirth in whatever Buddhaland they wish, according to their desire.
Should any living beings who recites and holds the spiritual mantra of Great Compassion fall into the three evil paths, I vow not to realise the right enlightenment. Should any living being who recites and holds the spiritual mantra of Great Compassion not be reborn in any Buddhaland, I vow not to realise the right enlightenment. Should any living being who recites and holds the spiritual mantra of Great Compassion not obtain unlimited samadhis and eloquence, I vow not to realise the right enlightenment. Should any living being who recites and holds the spiritual mantra of Great Compassion not obtain the fruits of whatever is sought in this very life, then he cannot have been making proper use of the Dharani of the Great Compassion Heart.
People and gods who recite and hold the Great Compassion Mantra will obtain fifteen kinds of good birth and will not suffer fifteen kinds of bad death.
The bad deaths are:
They will not die of starvation or privation.
They will not die from having been yoked, imprisoned, caned or otherwise beaten.
They will not die at the hands of hostile enemies.
They will not be killed in military battle.
They will not be killed by tigers, wolves, or other evil beasts.
They will not die from the venom of poisonous snakes, black serpents, or scorpions.
They will not drown or be burned to death.
They will not be poisoned to death.
They will not die as a result of sorcery.
They will not die of madness or insanity.
They will not be killed by landslides or falling trees.
They will not die of nightmares sent by evil people.
They will not be killed by deviant spirits or evil ghosts.
They will not die of evil illnesses which bind the body.
They will not commit suicide.
Those who recite and hold the spiritual Mantra of Great Compassion will not suffer any of these fifteen kinds of bad death and will obtain the following fifteen kinds of good birth:
Their place of birth will always have a good king.
They will always be born in a good country.
They will always be born at a good time.
They will always meet good friends.
The organs of their body will always be complete.
Their heart will be pure and full in the way.
They will not violate the prohibitive precepts.
Their family will be kind and harmonious.
They will always have the necessary wealth and goods in abundance.
They will always obtain the respect and help of others.
Their riches will not be plundered.
They will obtain everything they seek.
Dragons, gods, and good spirits will always protect them.
In the place where they are born they will see the Buddha and hear the Dharma.
They will awaken to the profound meaning of that Proper Dharma which they hear.
Those who recite and hold the Great Compassion Mantra will obtain these fifteen kinds of good birth. All gods and people should constantly recite and hold it, without carelessness.

Đức Avalokiteshvara phóng ra sáu ánh sáng từ thân Ngài tới sáu cõi chúng sinh. Mỗi ánh sáng hiển lộ như một Đức Phật.
Sáu Đức Phật là:
Đức Phật Gyajin trong cõi trời điều phục tánh kiêu mạn của tất cả các vị trời và giải thoát họ khỏi nỗi khổ;
Đức Phật Thagzangri trong cõi bán-thần điều phục sự ganh tị và giải thoát họ khỏi nỗi khổ của sự tranh đấu và chiến tranh liên tục;
Đức Phật Shakyamuni (Thích Ca Mâu Ni) trong cõi người điều phục lòng tham muốn của họ và giải thoát họ khỏi sinh, lão, bệnh, tử;
Đức Phật Sengye Rabten trong cõi súc sinh điều phục ô nhiễm của sự vô minh, và giải thoát họ khỏi nỗi khổ khi bị săn bắt, ăn thịt và hành hạ;
Đức Phật Namkhazod trong cõi ngạ quỷ điều phục ô nhiễm của sự keo kiệt, bủn xỉn, và giải thoát họ khỏi nỗi khổ khi phải chịu đựng cái nóng và lạnh khủng khiếp và những nỗi khổ mãnh liệt khác.
Nhờ đó vô số chúng sinh đã được giải thoát.
Adoration to the Triple Treasure!
Adoration to Avalokitesvara the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva who is the great compassionate one!
Om, to the one who performs a leap beyond all fears!
Having adored him, may I enter into the heart of the blue-necked one known as the noble adorable Avalokitesvara! It means the completing of all meaning, it is pure, it is that which makes all beings victorious and cleanses the path of existence.
Thus:
Om, the seer, the world-transcending one!
O Hari the Mahabodhisattva!
All, all!
Defilement, defilement!
The earth, the earth!
It is the heart.
Do, do the work!
Hold fast, hold fast!
O great victor!
Hold on, hold on!
I hold on.
To Indra the creator!
Move, move, my defilement-free seal!
Come, come!
Hear, hear!
A joy springs up in me!
Speak, speak! Directing!
Hulu, hulu, mala, hulu, hulu, hile!
Sara, sara! siri, siri! suru, suru!
Be awakened, be awakened!
Have awakened, have awakened!
O mercifule one, blue-necked one!
Of daring ones, to the joyous, hail!
To the successful one, hail!

Trong Phật Giáo Trung Hoa, có hai tông phái chính liên quan tới giáo lý và thực hành của Đức Avalokiteshvara. Tông Thiên Thai giảng dạy Kinh Saddharmapundarika hay Kinh Pháp Hoa. Trong một trong những chương của Phẩm Phổ Môn “Pu Mien Pin”, Đức Phật Thích Ca Mâu Ni dạy rằng vị Bồ Tát này có năng lực hiển lộ khắp mọi nơi và trong bất kỳ hình tướng nào để cứu giúp chúng sinh thoát khỏi đau khổ. Ngài sẵn sàng đáp ứng tất cả những ai gặp phải hiểm nguy như những nguy hiểm do vũ khí, xiềng xích, lửa đỏ, quỷ ma, những vách đá và sông nước gây ra.
