"Catch-22" nghĩa là gì?

'Catch-22' (shared via VOA) nghĩa là một khó khăn được giấu kín, hay một hoàn cảnh khó xử. Thành ngữ này xuất phát từ nhan đề cuốn sách xuất bản năm 1961 do tiểu thuyết gia Mỹ Joseph Heller viết về Thế chiến II. Nhân vật chính trong cuốn sách rất sợ bị giết nên tìm cách thuyết phục các sĩ quan rằng anh ta điên để khỏi phải lái máy bay ném bom. Tuy nhiên, các sĩ quan biết rằng những ai biết mình sợ hãi là những người không điên chút nào. Vì thế anh chàng này vẫn phải lái máy bay ra trận.

There's always been a bit of a catch 22 about golf - you need to have a handicap to join a club, yet it's very difficult to get that handicap in a civilised way without spending hours on a rain sodden driving range in some murky British suburb.
It is a catch-22 situation - without any big stars, the game is always going to have a low profile. But as long as it is low profile, it will struggle to produce big stars.
After graduating from college, I decided I wanted to get a job in advertising (quảng cáo). I answered a lot of want ads (quảng cáo tìm người làm), and set up interviews at various agencies, but nobody would hire (thuê mướn) me. Finally I realized I was in a catch-22 (hoàn cảnh khó xử): I couldn’t get an advertising job without experience (kinh nghiệm), but I couldn’t get experience without an advertising job!
Buying a birthday present for my girlfriend has always been a catch-22 for me: If I don’t ask her what she wants, I get the wrong thing and she’s upset (bực mình). On the other hand, if I ask her, she’s hurt (giận dỗi) because she says, of course, I should have been able to figure it out (suy đoán ra, biết) without asking. I just can’t win!
